Poems Every Child Should Know
By Joseph Pearce · Published by TAN Books
Overview
Poetry is meant for everyone, for you, for your child. But where should you begin?
Poems Every Child Should Know offers a clear starting point. Carefully selected and accompanied by insightful commentary from Joseph Pearce, this collection gathers the essential poems that form the foundation of a truly Catholic literary imagination.
Drawn from the rich inheritance of English poetry, these selections are not merely educational, they are formative. They train the mind to recognize beauty, discipline the imagination, and elevate the soul toward God. In learning these verses, children and adults alike begin to see the world as it was meant to be seen, through the lens of truth, goodness, and beauty.
Each poem is paired with reflections and “things to think about,” guiding the reader beyond passive reading into active contemplation. This is not just a book of poems, it is an initiation into a lifelong encounter with the poetic vision, one that prepares the soul to receive the divine.
- Introduce your children to the essential poems that shape a cultured and faithful imagination
- Learn to recognize and appreciate beauty in language, thought, and daily life
- Form habits of reflection through guided commentary and thoughtful prompts
- Build a foundation for lifelong engagement with literature and the poetic tradition
- Grow in the ability to perceive truth, goodness, and beauty in all things
From the Book
“Verse, like virtue, is often most beautiful when it is most simple. A good beginning makes a good end all the more likely.”
— Joseph Pearce

Fun to read aloud
Morality poems from Hilaire Belloc include titles like “Rebecca, Who slammed Doors for Fun and Perished Miserably” and “Jim, Who ran away from his Nurse, and was eaten by a lion.” “The Good Joan” by Lizette Woodworth Reese is wonderful (about Joan of Arc). My 9 month old enjoys listening to me read page after page filled with rhyme and meter (and playing with the ribbon bookmark). Great fun.

"Poems Every Child Should Know"
This is a beautiful, high-quality edition. I got it for my grandsons, ages 10 and 3. I enjoyed reading poems I learned as a child in grade school, and it was great to read the entire versions of many others. A lot of them I had just heard snippets of ("Casey at the Bat", for example). This is a great collection and a wonderful introduction to poetry for any age.

Beautifully bound and perfect for gift-giving! This volume contains a varied and colorful assortment of classic poetry which can serve either as an introduction or a well-rounded collection for young readers. I love the easy-to-read typeface and durable binding. There were many poems that were new to me and this was an added delight. Our family will treasure this always!

My kids enjoy the poetry, and I love knowing that it's a collection of poems I can trust to be enriching and edifying for my family. It's nice to hold, and lovely to read. Thank you to TAN and Joseph Pearce for compiling this beautiful collection!

Beautiful!
This book is such a beautiful addition to our home! My young children have never shown interest in poetry, especially memorizing it, but they read this everyday on their own and are so excited to tell me their new poems. I have learned a few myself!
