Arguably the most valuable habit that you can acquire during your elementary school years is to become a reader of good books.
The power to read is a gift of God that will help you in many ways. Reading well will enable you to learn about God and what He requires you to do to save your soul. It will aid you to develop your mind. It will help you to increase your knowledge, and it will afford you many happy hours of enjoyment.
Trusted and used by Catholic schools in the 1930s and 1940s and by numbers of homeschoolers today, the American Cardinal Readers take our young, elementary minds and have them read and study some of the finest stories from some of the best authors in a variety of ways.
Gradually testing the reader's abilities, these books lead them through texts intentionally by questions, directions, and suggestions to help them gain more rapidly the power to understand, interpret, and remember the stories and poems that they have read.
Using a natural progression that accelerates and enhances children’s reading abilities, the American Cardinal Readers take students who have just learned to read to being able to read within a few years the very words of Charles Dickens, Robert Louis Stevenson, G. K. Chesterton, Lewis Carroll, Msgr. Robert Hugh Benson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Francis Thompson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, William Blake, and George MacDonald and acquaints them with a multitude of other masters of the English language.
From short stories to parables, from fables to poems, the American Cardinal Readers are a crown-jewel collection of literature in any Catholic family's library that will assist in increasing vocabulary, enhancing reading comprehension, and giving them an appreciation for great writings from great writers.
Teach your child how to read from the best writers, systematically and deliberately arranged by traditional Catholic nuns in the early 20th century, so that they can have their supple minds come to know, love, and use the English language properly in their journey to knowing, loving, and serving God in this world, so as to be happy with Him in the next.

Must be expanded and enhanced.
I have long been familiar with the American Cardinal Readers, originally published by Benziger Brothers going through several editions. then later reprinted in the ;90;s by Neumann Press, now under Tan Books. I think that now is the right time to revisit this series and enhance them. It is about time that the pre-primer, Ready to Read (very rare and never reprinted), primer and first six volumes have the colored pictures enhanced and restored. Books 7 and 8 never had color. There were special endpapers in the early editions that should be put back in. The pre-primer should be reprinted for the first time since its heyday in the series. I have originals of all of the above with lovely endpapers for books up to and including 4th grade. The higher grades may have had endpapers, but I do not have an early edition with them in. I suspect that the endpapers were removed in the later editions as a cost saver. In addition, books 5 through 8 should come back into print. There were also teacher manuals and supplemental materials to accompany the series. I have never come across any of these in the used book market, but they must be out there somewhere.
Perfect for my 2nd grader
Perfect for my 2nd grader and my oldest who struggles with reading in general.
Enjoyable and Wholesome
My homeschooled 6 yr old son enjoys reading the stories and poems in these readers for his daily reading practice. They vary in length which both stretches his attention and gives him occasional breaks. I love that the stories are wholesome and often tell of a healthy family life.
Good so far!
We like the varying reading levels according to age and skill. The content is also nice. It's solidly catholic, edifying, and educational.
We are so grateful for these readers! While we have the typical readers used for school, we love having these that teach morals and virtue. They are beautifully bound as well, making them a perfect addition to our homeschool room. Thank you, TAN for continuing to publish quality literature.
I bought this for my 7 year old who needed some confidence reading big booksù and not just easy readers from the library. This set is so good. Great stories relating to faith and engaging to her. Would highly recommend for all beginning readers!
