"The Latin Mass Explained"

What is the Traditional Latin Mass?

The Traditional Latin Mass (TLM), also known as the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, is the liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church as it was celebrated universally from the time of Pope St. Gregory the Great (6th century) and codified by Pope St. Pius V after the Council of Trent in 1570...

Is the Novus Ordo Less Catholic Than the TLM?

Has modern Catholic worship lost its soul? In this thought-provoking episode, Dr. Peter Kwasniewski joins Conor Gallagher to ask a bold question: Is the Novus Ordo Mass less Catholic than the TLM?

Voices on the Sacred Liturgy

  • The Catholic Church has a dignity far surpassing that of every merely human society, for it was founded by Christ the Lord. It is altogether fitting, therefore, that the language it uses should be noble, majestic, and nonvernacular.

    - Pope St. John XXIII, Veterum Sapientia, 1962

  • [The Latin liturgy] was an expression of the unity of the Church and through its dignified character elicited a profound sense of the Eucharistic Mystery...The Roman Church has special obligations towards Latin...and she must manifest them whenever the occasion presents itself.
    - Pope St. John Paul II, Dominicae Cenae, 1980

  • What earlier generations held as sacred, remains sacred and great for us too, and it cannot be all of a sudden entirely forbidden or even considered harmful. It behooves us to preserve the riches which have developed in the Church's faith and prayer, and to give them their proper place.

    - Pope Benedict XVI, Summorum Pontificum, 2007

About the Initiative

The Year of the Latin Mass

TAN Books is launching The Year of the Latin Mass to anchor Catholic families in the worship that formed nearly every saint in the Church’s history. In a time of confusion and declining belief in the Real Presence, this initiative calls Catholics back to the liturgy that unified the Church for centuries. Our aim is to restore reverence and continuity in Catholic life, equipping families and parishes to hand on the Faith with clarity and conviction.

Frequently Asked Questions

What the Traditional Latin Mass Teaches Us

The Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) offers an unbroken spiritual lineage spanning roughly 1,400 years, teaching reverence, humility, and interior participation in the sacred mysteries in the same way most saints were formed. Its prayers, rites, and structure shape the faithful toward worship of Almighty God rather than personal preference.
The TLM is celebrated identically around the world, uniting diverse cultures in one unified rite. Latin serves as a sacred language that transcends local variations and unites the faithful under one spiritual expression of the Roman Rite.
Expect a deep focus on the Holy Sacrifice of Christ with prayerful silence before, during, and after Mass. Sacred roles are reserved for ordained ministers and altar servers, and modest dress and respectful conduct are the normative culture.
The 1962 TLM calendar preserves ancient feasts and observances, offering a richer temporal cycle without an “Ordinary Time,” enhancing the spiritual rhythm of Christmastide, Eastertide, Septuagesima, Rogation Days, and other traditional feast periods.
While music may vary, the language of the TLM—Latin—anchors the liturgy in a sacred tradition that directs attention to God’s transcendent mystery rather than cultural or stylistic trends. Chant and Gregorian repertoire often accompany the rite, reinforcing its timeless beauty.
The TLM’s norms require that only ordained ministers distribute Communion and emphasize reception on the tongue, minimizing inadvertent disrespect to the Blessed Sacrament and cultivating a deeper reverence for Christ’s Real Presence.
The ancient lectionary and propers of the TLM intentionally align readings and prayers with the liturgical occasion, guiding the faithful into the mysteries of Christ rather than prioritizing volume of Scripture. This fosters a meditative, mystagogical engagement with the Word of God.
Because of its solemn rites, sacred gestures, and rich symbols, the TLM forms children’s hearts and minds in reverence, obedience, and wonder before God, helping instill lifelong devotion and faith habits that passive instruction alone cannot achieve.
No. While beauty and solemnity are integral, the TLM’s purpose is the worship of God through a rite that reflects the sacred mystery of salvation, teaches orthodox theology, and anchors the worshiper in a transcendent encounter with the divine.
By participating in a rite that has formed countless saints, Catholics encounter the Mystery of Faith more palpably, connect with the historic Church, and join a worldwide communion of believers rooted in tradition, continuity, and reverence.
