Interestingly, almost all Church-approved stigmatists have been just that: visionaries as well as stigmatists. This book focuses on Church-approved stigmatists and their visions, revelations, and prophecies and warnings. In some cases, the prophecies and warnings relate to the End Times and Second Coming of Christ. That includes the striking revelations of the likes of Saint Faustina (1905-38), the first canonized saint of the new millennium. One might rightly interpret the mark of the stigmata (sometimes invisible stigmata, as in the cases of Saints Faustina and Catherine of Siena) as a heavenly/Church affirmation of these saints&rsquo; authenticity, likewise adding a certain authenticity to their claimed visions.</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is interesting that many people, including Protestants and even non-Christians, are intrigued by stigmata. It seems that nearly everyone finds claims of stigmata fascinating; there doesn&rsquo;t seem to be a lot of scoffers. Anytime the notion of stigmata is raised, including by Hollywood (albeit sensationally), eyes are wide open.&nbsp;</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This book opens with a comprehensive overview of the phenomenon of stigmata, beginning with the words of St. Paul that some believe might be the first recorded case of stigmata. Aside from St. Paul, Saint Francis (1182-1226) is believed to be the first stigmatist. The opening chapter looks at the data and cases that we know of. Thereafter, the book provides individual chapters focused on figures from Catherine of Siena to Anne Catherine Emmerich, Gemma Galgani, Padre Pio, and more, finishing with Saint Faustina.&nbsp;</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, not all of these stigmatic saints had visions of the Final Days. They need not to have changed history. Some of the special visions were along the lines of St. Francis&rsquo;s transformational conversations with Jesus at the San Damiano cross, which nonetheless had a significant larger purpose: &ldquo;</span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Francesco</span></em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&rdquo; said Jesus, &ldquo;</span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ripara la mia Chiesa</span></em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&rdquo; (&ldquo;Francis, repair my Church.&rdquo;)</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Francis did just that. That was a historic moment for the Church and the faith. Unlike the likes of Martin Luther, Francis endeavored upon a genuine reformation.</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These stigmatists and their revelations have spoken to us in profound ways from the time of Christ to the Middle Ages to literally the end times. This book absolutely blew me away!","text":"If you’re a Catholic (or even just curious about Catholic mysticism), The Stigmatists is a must-read. It dives deep into the lives of people who bore the wounds of Christ, hence the name stigmata, and how these extraordinary gifts shaped their lives and their messages to the world.\r\n\r\nWhat I love most about this book is how relatable it makes these holy men and women. Sure, they experienced incredible mystical phenomena, but Préau shows us their humanity too—their struggles, their humility, and their unwavering love for God. Saints like St. Francis of Assisi and St. Padre Pio are featured, but there are also lesser-known stigmatists who have equally powerful stories.\r\n\r\nThe revelations and warnings shared by these individuals are incredibly timely. They’re like a wake-up call for all of us to turn back to God, embrace prayer and penance, and really reflect on the state of our souls. It’s not just about the drama of stigmata (though that’s fascinating!) it’s about their deeper message: God’s love, mercy, and call to conversion.\r\n\r\nPréau’s writing is easy to follow but still packed with depth. Whether you’re new to the topic or already familiar with stigmatists, you’ll get something out of this book. Personally, it reminded me of the beauty of redemptive suffering.\r\n\r\nIf you’re looking for a book that will deepen your faith and leave you in awe of God’s work in the world, I cannot recommend this one enough. He points out that Jesus lets doubting Thomas touch the crucifixion wounds in His hands and feet and side so that the apostle would stop doubting and believe. Perhaps the stigmatist saints have been given to us so that we too may stop doubting and believe. I think most Catholics are familiar with some of the stigmatists Kengor covers in the book–Saint Francis, Padre Pio–but how did I miss the fact that there are hundreds more who also bore the markings of Christ’s wounds on the cross? The book provides so many amazing stories of dozens of these stigmatist saints and delves into the visionary prophecies and warnings which accompanied their miraculous wounds. \r\n\r\nBut the book is more than a very detailed and readable compendium of stigmatists–Kengor connects the messages that many of the stigmatists received in visions to the troubles in the modern Church. It is remarkable how enduringly relevant their warnings are. The stigmatists spoke out against the terrible sins and scandals indulged in by the churchmen and laity of their day–and which continue to trouble our parishes and hierarchy today. Fascinatingly, Kengor documents that supernatural stigmatisms have increased in frequency in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and he includes information on alleged stigmatists who, due to their contemporaneousness, have not yet been conclusively recognized by Rome.\r\n\r\nI especially appreciate Kengor’s approach in the book–he is not simply preaching the choir and relating information to Catholics who already know and believe the phenomena he documents. This is the sort of book you could recommend to a Protestant friend or a Catholic who is not sure about the reality of miracles. Kengor brings his historian’s skill to the book as well as his perspective as a convert who knows first hand what doubts, objections, and misgivings people might have with something as shocking as a saint bearing upon his or her body Christ’s own bloody wounds from the cross.
