I had always assumed that the change was merely a switch from Latin to the vernacular. However, Dr Kwasniewski;s book reveals how drastic the change actually was, and the machinations of the clergy responsible for those changes.\n\nThis book also helps explain why the Novus Ordo is so spiritually unfulfilling. Prayers and chants were stripped out, and those prayers that survived were diluted to become feel-good pablum; mankind;s fallen nature, the consequences of sin and the reason why the Word Became Flesh to redeem mankind were removed because those messages were thought to be "too hard" to 20th Century Catholics. Furthermore, the Novus Ordo Mass was purposefully made to mirror Protestant services. Also, certain members of the committee creating the Novus Ordo are shown to have had an arrogant contempt for the Latin Mass, as well as the hubris to think that they could create a Mass that would make Protestants become Catholics.\n\nThis book really helped me in diagnosing why I was becoming spiritually dissatisfied with the Novus Ordo: it was created by committee in a misguided attempt to recreate an ancient Christian Mass; the committee members refused to acknowledge that the Tredentine Latin Mass was a codification of existing liturgy, and not created out of whole-cloth by St. Pope Pius V. Thus, the reintroduction of discarded liturgical practices (such as receiving Communion while standing with the hand) was a reversion to a practice that had already been discarded due to not being reverent enough towards the Most Holy Eucharist. Other practices (such as making the priest face the congregation) were borrowed from Protestants, and the Gregorian chant was discarded for insipid songs with discordant harmonies.\n\nIt has become painfully obvious over the last 50 years that the Novus Ordo Mass has borne bad fruit. Dr. Kwasniewski repeatedly makes the point that the Novus Ordo is a valid Mass. The problem is that it was a product of a few men over the course of a few years, rather than evolving organically over some 1600 years that incorporated practices that Church Fathers were declaring to have been passed down from the Apostles. Furthermore, the committee disregarded directives set down by Vatican II (that ecumenical council voted to retain Latin and Gregorian chant). The irony is that the clergy that thought they were creating a Mass for modern man, actually created something that reflects the social ferment of the 1960s rather than something ageless.\n\nThe book is obviously the product of prodigious research with lots of footnotes and a large bibliography. Also, the author;s writing style is clear and easily understandable. This outstanding book will help every Catholic to become more informed as to the reasons why the Novus Ordo must be discarded. It is long past time for the Church to go back to the Latin Mass.","date":"May 24th 2023"},{"name":"Matthew R.","rating":"5","title":"Excellent contribution","text":"Dr. Kwasniewski (NB who has consulted me over the course of writing the essays which make up this book) has written (and collected and refined) a nice series of essays in order to place the main problems facing the church in what concerns her sacred rites, as he tries to push past the somewhat stale and even boring debates that have preoccupied (English-speaking) Catholics since at least the early 2000s.","date":"May 24th 2023"},{"name":"svt3120","rating":"5","title":"SUPERB LITERATURE","text":"Without exaggeration, Dr. Kwenieski is very passionate and exercises vitality in the traditional Roman Rite today. In his latest book, Dr. Peter Kwasniewski argues that, ever since the new liturgical books following the Second Vatican Council came into force, Roman Catholic faithful have suffered the effects of a hasty and far-reaching reform permeated with nominalism, voluntarism, Protestantism, rationalism, antiquarianism, hyperpapalism, and other modern errors. Man is not master over divine liturgy, Dr. Kwasniewski emphasizes; rather, all of us are called to be stewards of the sacred, from the lowest-ranking layman to the pope himself.

Dr. Kwasniewski shows that sacred Tradition is the guiding principle for all authentic Christian liturgy, which originates from Christ and is guided by the Holy Spirit throughout the life of the Church. His principal thesis in this work is that the prominent identifying traits of the classical Roman Rite—and indeed of all traditional rites, Eastern and Western—are absent from the Novus Ordo, estranging it from their company and making it impossible to call it “the Roman Rite.”

To respond to this crisis of rupture, Dr. Kwasniewski calls for a full return to the traditional rite, the Roman Rite in its robust, perennial richness, for which no special permission is or could ever be needed—as exposited by Pope Benedict XVI.

Fidelity to the traditional Latin Liturgy is, at its root, fidelity to the Roman Church and to Christ Himself, Who has lovingly inspired the growth and perfection of our religious rites for two thousand years. This awe-inspiring gift of Tradition allows us to taste, even now, the banquet of the promised land of heaven.

Editorial Reviews

Dr. John C. Rao

“If you want to know why youthful instinct, scholarly knowledge, and priestly self-awareness cannot help but lead believers ‘back to our future’ in all of its fullness, then you must study Dr. Kwasniewski’s detailed and unanswerable paean to Christ in Sacred Tradition.”

Fr. Thomas Crean, OP (author of The Mass and the Saints)

“At once logical and lyrical, this book is a profound reflection on the meaning of tradition both in general and in the Roman liturgy in particular. The author’s knowledge of his subject is at once speculative and practical, while his writing is both heartfelt and humorous, and, if sometimes polemical, never unjust. While not everyone may agree with his conclusions, this is a book that no one who is interested in the health of the Church should neglect.”

Roberto de Mattei (author of Love for the Papacy and Filial Resistance to the Pope in the History of the Church)

“The welcome celebration, throughout the world, of an increasing number of Masses according to the usus antiquior must be accompanied by a keen awareness of what the Church’s “living liturgical tradition” actually is. Peter Kwasniewski’s study makes an important contribution to the in-depth understanding of this tradition. At once liturgical, historical, theological, and spiritual, The Once and Future Roman Rite assures the author a place of first rank among the scholars of the Revolution that, since 1969, has opposed the ritus modernus of Paul VI to the rite of the Latin Church’s Tradition. ”

Fr. John Hunwicke

“Since the liturgical revolution which followed Vatican II, sound Catholic scholars, mostly lay men and women, have studied, laboured, discussed, written, and lectured about Liturgy and have painstakingly established a fact-based consensus in favor of Tradition. Dr. Kwasniewski synthesises the academic discoveries of the last half-century.”
