Saint Margaret Clitherow

Margaret Clitherow was executed in York, England at age 33 for allowing Catholic priests to celebrate Mass in her home during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1558-1603). Her martyrdom was particularly cruel because she refused to plead to save her loved ones and the jurors from having to participate in a sham trial. Clitherow was canonized in 1970 as one of 40 Martyrs of England and Wales.
