By Nancy Carpentier Brown · Published by TAN Books

    Overview

Summer vacation turns into an adventure for the three Nicholl sisters when Mr. Gilbert Chesterton and his wife, Frances, come to town. Eleven‑year‑old Clare dreams of writing a detective story. Eight‑year‑old Cece longs to be a champion roller‑skater. Ten‑year-old Joan wants to play the locked piano in the parlor. As they befriend the Chestertons, skating accidents, puppet shows, and mystery‑solving bring them into friendship, laughter, and virtue. Beautifully Illustrated

I purchased this book when it was available as a Five Dollar book. I am always looking for books which may encourage my grandchildren to read. The cover and the illustrations in the book are absolutely gorgeous. I loved looking at all of the details from the faces to the beveled windows and the scrolling around the stage. However, the borders around every page felt confusing. The opening of the story seemed unrealistic until I read the endnotes. It speaks of a very different time in our history, and of a very well read 11-year old. My favorite part, besides the illustrations, involved Chesterton;s pen, glasses, cloak, hat, the secret hidden in his cane, and the pillow! The book made me want to read more about Chesterton and his very sweet wife Frances.

Loved it! A beautiful story about a loving Catholic family and how to overcome the death of a loved one. We especially loved the oceanside setting. Perfect for a beach read over the Summer.
