The Gospel of John with Augustine

Lectio Divina with the Spiritual Masters · Published by TAN Books

    Overview

The Gospel of John with Augustine invites readers to encounter Christ through the Church's ancient practice of Lectio Divina, pairing the inspired text of St. John's Gospel with the profound spiritual insights of St. Augustine, one of the greatest Doctors of the Church. Combining prayerful Scripture reading with Augustine's timeless wisdom, this volume offers a structured path toward deeper contemplation, conversion, and union with God.

John's Gospel uniquely reveals the mystery of Jesus Christ—from the eternal Word made flesh to His Passion, Death, Resurrection, and the intimate life of the Holy Trinity. Augustine's reflections illuminate these mysteries with remarkable theological depth while remaining intensely practical for the spiritual life. Together, Scripture and saint lead readers beyond intellectual study into a living conversation with God through disciplined prayer and meditation.

Lectio Divina on the Gospel of John

Posted by Michael on Apr 9th 2026

I had visualized something quite different. I expected a text rich with St Augustine's commentary, not a programmed "meditation" and writing journal. This may be fine for younger folk, but not for me.

Nicely laid out, room for notes, published in a type of paper that I enjoy. The Gospel of St John is explained not only in historical but also in spiritual terms which is what we need for proper meditation.

Presents St. Augustine in a way that’s easy to understand

Posted by Marie on May 10th 2025

The reflections from St. Augustine are presented in a way that make his insights relevant to the reader. His insights “lift” the reader’s mind to consider new aspects of the life of our Lord. And the Lectio Divina and journal format help in applying the insights personally.

This is the book on Lectio Divina I have been waiting for. It makes meditation on scripture so much easier and organized. It takes the planning aspect out so you can just read and meditate. And you can’t go wrong with St. Augustine’s commentary!
