The Smoke of Satan: How Corrupt and Cowardly Bishops Betrayed Christ, His Church, and the Faithful… and What Can Be Done About It
By Philip F. Lawler · Published by TAN Books
Overview
This investigative work examines decades of failure by Church leaders leading to crisis, corruption, and scandal in the Catholic Church. The author argues that recent revelations about abuse and misconduct represent not only individual failings, but a systemic breakdown of episcopal accountability, doctrinal coherence, and moral discipline within the hierarchy. The book concludes by urging committed lay Catholics and faithful clergy to demand reform, transparency, and a renewed fidelity to the Gospel for the sake of the Church’s future.
- Exposes how scandals of abuse and misconduct reflect deeper structural and moral failures among bishops and clergy
- Analyzes how institutional cover‑ups and a culture of secrecy have eroded trust, doctrine, and discipline in the Church
- Reveals internal pressures towards secularism and moral compromise within segments of the Vatican leadership
- Details controversial testimonies and calls for thorough investigation and acknowledgment of wrongdoing at all levels of Church hierarchy
- Offers a concrete plan for reform, calling the faithful to demand accountability and to work toward renewal of sacramental integrity, discipline, and orthodoxy

Smike of Satan
Mr. Lawler correctly points out how our weak Bishops and Priest have caused the Church to go into free fall. Sin and Hell are rarely, if ever, mentioned at Mass. It's time for the laity to bring the Church back to her traditional roots.

The Church on earth is called to be the Church Militant
In my view, this is a very good book, this is one book among many that address cultural evils outside and inside the Catholic Church. This book focuses on the failure of leadership - especially many bishops in their duty to teach, to sanctify, and to govern - and offers a comprehensive list of what very lay person should, and should not, do for their part. We must all realize that in this world true faith in Jesus Christ is counter cultural and that the Church on earth is called to be the Church Militant, wielding the Sword of Truth, and attracting others via personal holiness.
