The son of Armenian immigrants, Mitchell Kalpakgian was born in Milford Massachusetts, in 1941. He earned his BA in English from Bowdoin College in 1963, his MA in English from the University of Kansas in 1965, and his PhD from the University of Iowa in 1974.
